QReport covers homes in nine Florida counties. Here is how permit records are kept, and which of them QReport has access to in each town.
The town or the county
Inside town limits, the town usually issues building permits. Outside town limits, the county does. A few small towns let the county handle all of their permits.
Often both
One home can have permits on the town's website and on the county's website, and each can show permits the other does not. That happens when a home was in the county before the town took it in, or when the county handled some of the work.
Old systems
Towns and counties switch record systems over the years. Older permits often stay behind in the old system or in a scanned archive, and never show up on the new website.
For every home, a QReport pulls permits from every one of these records it has access to, and puts them in one list.
